Prolific vs Swagbucks vs Qmee: which pays more?

Updated 5 Nov 2026 · 4 min read

Three names come up constantly in UK “beer money” threads. They are not the same product. Prolific is mostly academic research, Swagbucks is a broad get-paid-to network, and Qmee mixes surveys with search rewards and near-instant PayPal. Below is a side-by-side using published tests — mainly Save the Student — plus each site’s own cash-out rules where we have them.

Prolific — highest cited £/hour, slowest onboarding

Prolific pays participants for research studies. Official guidance expects researchers to meet a £6 per hour floor and recommends £9/hr. Save the Student’s hands-on finding was closer to £5–6/hr. Cash-out help states PayPal within 24 hours once you withdraw, with a combined minimum around £6 — but studies can sit in approval for up to 22 days.

The trade-off is access: new participants usually join a waitlist. There is no standing public paid referral scheme for participants; Prolific’s help page says you can encourage friends onto the waitlist but generally will not be paid for it unless an occasional campaign is live in your account.

Choose Prolific if you want higher pay-per-hour once accepted and you are willing to wait for invitations and approvals.

Swagbucks — mid £/hour, more ways to earn

Save the Student places Swagbucks around £3–4/hr on surveys. Confirm any live UK signup bonus in-account before relying on a published offer. Payouts are PayPal or gift cards; Survey Payout Watch’s typical PayPal window is 1–3 business days, occasionally longer.

Swagbucks is broader than surveys (shopping, offers, videos depending on region). That can raise or lower your personal £/hour depending on what you actually do. Its referral programme pays the referrer 10% of a friend’s eligible earnings while both accounts stay active (official Referral Program Rules, last updated 24 March 2026) — useful later if you share the site, irrelevant to your own hourly rate today.

Choose Swagbucks if you want a daily habit with more than surveys and can live with a multi-day PayPal wait.

Qmee — lowest cited £/hour, fastest cash-out

Save the Student lists Qmee at £2–3/hr with a 1p PayPal minimum. Survey Payout Watch describes payouts as normally within minutes. Qmee’s UK terms (last updated February 2026) limit the service to residents of the UK, US, Canada, Australia, France or Germany.

A friend-get-friend scheme may appear for designated users; rewards credit after the friend’s first PayPal or gift-card cash-out. Confirm whatever your live Referrals tab shows before relying on published invite amounts.

Choose Qmee if you value being able to withdraw tiny balances immediately more than maximising hourly rate.

Which pays more per hour?

On Save the Student’s published test ranges alone, the order is:

  1. Prolific — about £5–6/hr found (with a £6/hr platform floor)
  2. Swagbucks — about £3–4/hr
  3. Qmee — about £2–3/hr

That is not the same as “which makes you the most money this month”. Availability of studies, screen-outs, and whether you are still on Prolific’s waitlist matter more than a one-line ranking. Many people run all three: Qmee for instant micro-withdrawals, Swagbucks for daily volume, Prolific when academic studies appear.

Decision shortcuts

  • Need cash today from tiny balances: start with Qmee’s 1p PayPal minimum and minute-scale payouts (STS + SPW).
  • Want the best cited hourly rate and can wait: apply to Prolific and treat the waitlist and study approvals as part of the job.
  • Want a daily routine with surveys plus extras: Swagbucks sits in the middle on £/hour and offers more activity types, with slower PayPal than Qmee.

Whatever you pick, keep a separate email for panels, fill profiles honestly, and cash out when you hit the minimum — Save the Student’s own advice is that waiting for a huge balance rarely beats regular small withdrawals on legitimate panels.

What this comparison does not claim

We have not merged reader submissions into these £/hour figures yet. HonestPayouts only publishes a reader median after five or more reports for a site. Until then, every rate above is a cited published test or official floor — open the original pages if you need the methodology.

Tax note: survey and cashback income can count toward trading income in the UK. See our side hustle tax guide and HMRC’s guidance on the £1,000 trading allowance before you assume small balances are invisible.
